2D/3D Animation

A 2D Digital Painter roles include: Adding colour to the line images created by Animators. Scanning and cleaning up the line work on a computer, if necessary before colouring and ensures continuity requirements are met and follow guidelines.

A strong eye for colour and detail.


Understanding of the animation process.


Be computer literate and know or have the ability to learn relevant software.


Ability to take direction and adjust work as required. Ability to pay close attention to detail, with a methodical and thorough approach to work.


Stay calm under pressure, be able to multitask and prioritise the most important tasks first, and meet deadlines.


Communicate well, work well as part of a team.

Career Path to 2D Digital Painter

Paths to a 2D Digital Painter include: a strong portfolio. Passing studio tests. Roles beyond this include: Junior Compositor, Compositor. Routes into this role include a degree in Animation, Design, Illustration, Fine Art, Computer Animation. However showreel and experience are most important along with knowledge of relevant software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Maya, Toonboom, ZBrush, Moho, TVPaint are examples).
